PMS & PMDD Explained

PMS & PMDD Explained

90% of women have experienced some form of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). It’s wildly common, but it isn’t always normal. Having ovaries does not mean you have to suffer all month long -- we promise! It is possible not to dread a particular time of the month due to painful PMS.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a subtype of PMS. Common symptoms of PMDD include anger, irritability, and internal tension.

Nutritional deficiencies are one of the contributing factors to PMS and PMDD. Topping up on all the essential vitamins and minerals is one of the best ways to decrease symptoms and feel like your best self every day of the month.

Here’s a list of evidence-backed micronutrients in Top Up Tonic that have been shown to be helpful in treating PMS and PMDD symptoms:

  • Vitamin E: Has anti-prostaglandin effects, that have been shown to be effective in reducing menstrual migraines

  • Magnesium: Can be helpful in treating premenstrual anxiety, and overall PMS symptomatology (e.g. cramping, bloating, mood swings)

  • Vitamin B1: It helps relieve cramping, mental and physical symptoms of PMS by acting on uterine muscular contractions, the central nervous system, and the neuromuscular system

  • Vitamin B6: Can be helpful in treating premenstrual anxiety, and overall PMS symptoms

  • Zinc: Women with PMS have lower zinc levels and higher copper levels compared to women without PMS. Copper and zinc compete in the body, so high copper will deplete zinc levels. Not only does zinc supplementation improve psychological and psychomotor symptoms of PMS, but it also improves the physical and mental quality of life

  • Vitamin C: Low antioxidant status has also been associated with PMS, so improving antioxidant status with nutrients like vitamin C, E and zinc can be helpful in treating PMS

It’s important to remember when treating PMS/PMDD, it generally takes two to three cycles before you notice improvements. Significant changes take time!

Life is unpredictable. Your hormones don’t have to be.
