The Importance of Nutrients
As mentioned in our last blog post on hormonal contraceptives’ negative side effects, nutrient depletion can cause the body to not function as efficiently. This can impact everything from mood and energy levels to digestion, wreaking serious havoc on your everyday life. In creating this Top Up Tonic, we’ve not only considered nutrients that get depleted by The Pill, but also how best to restore your body’s natural mechanisms back to equilibrium. Let us explain how, ingredient by ingredient:
B Complex Vitamins
Research has shown that the Pill depletes Vitamins B2, B6, B9, and B12, especially B6. Many women who take hormonal contraceptives suffer from migraine headaches, which is correlated to a deficiency in Vitamin B2 aka riboflavin. A deficiency in Vitamin B6 can also be a cause of headaches, plus low energy, mood swings, and skin issues. Sound familiar? These are some commonly reported symptoms of women using birth control. When supplementing with B6, studies have shown that women experience less nausea and decreased rates of both headaches and depression. B12 also impacts a healthy mood and is known to be depleted by hormonal contraceptives.

Folate absorption by your body is reduced by The Pill. Folate deficiency causes an increase in homocysteine levels, which are seen frequently in early onset heart disease. As well, high homocysteine levels are the most powerful predictor of strokes. This is why the FDA approves of birth control pills being supplemented with folic acid. Folate can also protect against a cervical cancer onset and persistent HPV. HPV infections continue to increase in severity and size, posing a potential cancer risk that may be reduced by supplementing with folic acid.
Women taking The Pill have been shown to have decreased Vitamin C levels. Vitamin C is important for your skin quality, as it’s involved in collagen synthesis. Women who take the pill have control increased levels of copper. Copper is transported by a protein called ceruloplasmin, which oxidizes and destroys Vitamin C. Depletions in Vitamin C affect your immune system’s ability to fight infections and can increase susceptibility to colds and flus.

Glutathione is your body’s master antioxidant. Vitamin E is necessary to restore your body’s supply of glutathione. It is fundamental to overall health, a strong immune system, and healthy skin. The Pill can interfere with Vitamin E absorption, which, given that everyone wants to look and feel their best, is not ideal. Vitamin E in combination with Vitamin C recycles glutathione and are also essential to its regeneration in your body.

Selenium helps the thyroid work better to keep your metabolism functioning at its best. The Pill causes depletions in Selenium and Zinc, which are both essential co-factors for thyroid health, and are necessary to help keep your weight and energy levels balanced.

Most people know that magnesium deficiencies can cause muscle cramps or spasms, but did you also know that a magnesium deficiency is associated with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, migraines, and osteoporosis? Women on the Pill have been shown to have reduced magnesium levels, and imbalances to the body’s calcium-magnesium ratio can affect blood coagulability, increasing the risk of blood clots, one of The Pill’s most well-known side effects.
More information can be found about the Magnesium in our Top up Tonic here!
Zinc is a key player in normal body functioning and is critical for healthy skin and a healthy immune system. Zinc regulates hormones, skin healing and repair, and brain health. It is fundamental to your brain’s ability to adapt in times of stress. Absorption of Zinc is inhibited by The Pill.

An essential antioxidant, known as the spark plug to healthy skin. A deficiency is related to migraines, muscle fatigue, and heart symptoms, CoQ10 works with Vitamin E to decrease oxidative stress. CoQ10 and Vitamin E are found to be low in women taking The Pill. CoQ10 is also involved in producing energy for your body, giving you that extra kick! We’ve paired it with N-acetyl cysteine in our Top Up Tonic to help your liver detoxify excess hormones and other toxins.
Your essential neurotransmitters, including melatonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine all rely upon Tyrosine to function optimally. Mood changes and food cravings are frequent symptoms you may have experienced due to tyrosine depletion, as it is heavily involved in hormone metabolism. Tyrosine also helps build healthy thyroid hormones, essential for your metabolism. An insufficiency in thyroid hormones can lead to fatigue, irritability, decreased libido, and weight gain. We have two words for that: No. Fun. To benefit the thyroid gland, we’ve paired Kelp with L-Tyrosine to provide iodine, also crucial for thyroid functioning.
L-Tyrosine is one of the main components in the Top Up Tonic's thyroid support complex, and more information can be found on the thyroid support complex ingredient page.
Probiotics and Synbiotics
Oral contraceptive pills have recently been found to increase the risk of IBD by five times! Lack of a healthy gut microbiome can contribute to gut-related disease, including IBS, Crohn’s, and Ulcerative Colitis. Symptoms like bloating, gas, and abnormal bowel movements could be a sign of a disruption in gut health. The Probiotic strains Bifidobacterium longum and breve can help to prevent these conditions. We’ve also included a Prebiotic, Inulin, to help the probiotics thrive and multiply. As they increase in population, the good bacteria (probiotics) replace the space in the gut that the bad bacteria can otherwise occupy. Um, yes, please.
